India’s NCB to investigate crypto after Bitcoin-linked drug bust case makes noise

The Narcotics Control Bureau will investigate cryptocurrencies in an elaborate manner to suppress the sale of drugs on the darknet. The government told Parliament on Tuesday that NCB officers are being trained for probing cryptocurrencies and darknet. The agency is trying to find out where drugs are being bought using bitcoin.NCB also arrested Makarand Pardeep Adivirkar aka “crypto king” in Mumbai for allegedly using bitcoins to buy illegal goods.

Minister of state for home Nityanand Rai said, “coordination is being done with drug law enforcement agencies of other countries for sharing intelligence related to dark web” and “assistance is being provided to states for improving their enforcement capability, including electronic surveillance”.

The NCB has also been mandated for enforcement of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The agency is facing a major challenge with the collection of intelligence and darknet. So, the government is setting up a training centre for drug law enforcement at Bhopal, under the Bureau of Police Research & Development, said Nityanand Rai.
