The Indian state of Telangana is planning to introduce blockchain technology to streamline its food distribution system, according to local media reports.
The Telangana State Civil Supplies Corporation (TSCSC) hopes that using distributed ledger will help combat fraud and bring more transparency into the public distribution system (PDS).
With the trial run, Telangana will become the first state in the country to use blockchain technology in the PDS scheme.
“The corporation will give a unique QR code to each jute bag. The encrypted information will be connected to department servers. When the officials concerned would scan the code, the data related to the bag would be retrievable on their smartphones,” the newspaper reported.
The move follows the government’s release of a draft blockchain policy earlier this year.
Telangana is not the only state to jump on the blockchain bandwagon.
The Indian state of Tamil Nadu is set to release a blockchain and AI policy soon, The Times of India reported.
Tamil Nadu’s AI and blockchain policies are expected to formulate the rules by which the state government can leverage such technologies to deliver government service. A blockchain platform is already being built by the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency (TNeGA), the paper said.
